Signs and symptoms of tonsil lymphoma

Lymphoma is the term used for a type of cancer that comes from the cells of the lymphatic system. This cancer can affect different parts of the lymphatic system, including the tonsils, which are a group of lymph nodes close to the opening of the throat. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and prevention statistics, tonsils lymphoma, also known as amygdala lymphoma or cancer of the pharynx, affects about 2.8 of 100,000 people in the United States each year. There are a number of symptoms to monitor, although their delayed onset can make the diagnosis difficult.

Enlarged tonsils

Enlarged tonsils is a primary symptom of tonsil lymphoma, however, several other factors explain most cases of tonsils. According to the International Journal of Pediatric ent, while most cases of tonsil lymphoma involve the symptom of an enlarged tonsil, the larger tonsils do not indicate a lymphoma of the amygdala. In addition, there is a low incidence of tonsil cancer in children, which makes even less likely lymphoma in pediatric cases. A sign that can sometimes differentiate tonsils caused by lymphoma is asymmetric swelling. This is known as "unilateral enlargement of the tonsils" and may require a biopsy for a complete diagnosis.

Neck Pain and swelling

Pain is often reported in cases of tonsil lymphoma, especially in the affected area and around the neck and throat, but not exclusively. Swelling in the neck can be caused by lymph nodes. This can be accompanied by painful chewing or swallowing, difficulty talking and sore throat.
