Hodgkin's lymphoma (Hodgkin's disease)
Every year in Switzerland there are about 250 new cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma, which accounts for less than 1% of all cancer diseases. Hodgkin lymphomas more often affect men (61%) than women (39%). 66% of patients were under 50 years of age at diagnosis, 19% were between 50 and 69 years of age.

In medicine, there are two main groups of lymphomas: Non-Hodgkin lymphomas and Hodgkin lymphomas, or Hodgkin's disease.
Hodgkin lymphomas are formed at the expense of lymphocytes, a kind of white blood cells. Unmature or malignant lymphocytes proliferate rapidly in an uncontrolled manner; They invade lymphatic organs, such as lymph nodes or spleen, or other organs, such as the intestine.
Risk Factors
A weakened immune system, e.g. as a result of another disease or treatment (immunosuppressive drugs after organ transplantation, e.g.);
Chronic infections by certain viruses (Epstein Barr virus, hepatitis, AIDS) or by certain bacteria (e.g. Helicobacter pylori).
Symptoms
Hodgkin's lymphoma can cause a wide variety of disorders. swollen lymph nodes in the neck, neck or groin area may be early warning signs. General symptoms such as fever, night sweats, weight loss and/or abatement are also characteristic.
At an advanced stage, cancer cells can invade virtually all organs and cause disturbances.
Diagnosis
In case of suspicion of Hodgkin's lymphoma, a lymph node is taken and examined under a microscope. Additional investigations are needed to determine the stage of the disease, such as an ultrasound of the abdomen or chest x-rays.
Treatment
The treatment is always planned individually and adapted to each particular case. In general, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy are used.
Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas
Every year in Switzerland, about 1600 people learn that they have lymphoma, a term that brings together different types of cancerous diseases in the lymphatic system. The brochure deals with the two main kinds: Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas. It also presents the possibilities of treatments, which depend among other things on the type of lymphoma and the stage of the disease-and gives information to manage the disease at best daily. Some lymphomas heal, for others it will have to count with relapses-that it will be to treat again. Thanks to medical advances, many people are now enjoying a good quality of life.
